Industrial private land logging has a huge effect on public resources like clean water, fish and wildlife. For instance, in 1995, public agencies clearcut 6,316 acres in Oregon west of the Cascades. Private land clearcuts totaled 80,905 acres in the same time period. These acres are regulated by the Oregon Forest Practices Act and watched over by the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF). The ODF enforces rules made by the State Board of Forestry. It's these rules that are currently in question: Are they adequate to protect human lives, endangered salmon and other wildlife? And what about resources that belong to our children, like forests logged sustainably and healthy top soil? This page will explore some of these issues.
