Logging Rider

Protesting Timber Sales

The Umpqua is chalking up its share of citizens protesting the liquidation of our precious resources -- our ancient trees, clean water, fish and other wildlife -- all for the sake of industry profits. Long term jobs in tourism, timber, and fishing are being sacrificed, and being protested by the people who live here. Included in this menu is information about our past protests, with hopes that the protests can stop with the destruction.

What the Protests Look Like

Every hour that loggers are delayed from reaching the trees with their chainsaws, is an hour more of life for ancient trees. These are pictures of a 1996 Umpqua protest.

Cars Blocking Road

Cars Blocking Road

Sign on car says "Road Closed due to forest health crisis." Protesters are locked under cars.

Look Under The Hood

The cars cannot be moved without endangering the lives of people who have locked themselves together, inside a steel case, across the car frame. No one can drive up the road.

Tripod Blocking Road

No vehicle with humans and chainsaws can drive past this blockade without toppling the tripod and endangering the life of the sitter perched over 30 feet up in the air.
